Week 5 - Subcultures & Style

What is a Subculture
Ross Haenfler - A relatively diffuse social network having a shared identity, distinctive meanings around certain ideas, practices, and objects, and a sense of marginalization from or resistance to a perceived “conventional” society.

Shared Distinct Meanings - Meanings are created and enforced through social interaction and continue to develop and grow as time goes on, this allows for the unique practices of the subculture to develop and steer away from the generic norm in society.

Resistance - Subculturists tend to come together based on the shared set of values and ethics and will normally resist or subvert the ideas and values proposed by the mainstream cultures ideology.

Marginalisation - Subcultures all share a level of status, and the sense that some choose their marginalisation. Nobody forces people to adopt a certain subculture identity, yet people do this regardless and then get viewed as a outsider.

Week 4 - The Graphic Code of Comic Books

2/28/2022

For this weeks task we were asked to pick a comic artist of our choice and analyse their work. I had chosen Tango Gao as I like how simple yet unique his designs are. The majority of his comics are Moment to Moment with some being Action to Action, this is because most his comics are just small comical illustrations which feature a rolling narrative to them. Most of his comics, while simple, require some understating as some feature elements of intertextuality which you would need to understand to give a positive reading of the text, for example the QR and Barcode comic requires you to understand how QR codes are slowly taking over from barcodes, an older audience might now understand this reading as much as a younger audience would. Some of his comics don't feature a panel or gutter, this could be down to most of them being Moment to Moment and Action to Action as it creates a nice quick flow in which the audience can quickly absorb and doesn't have to spend time taking it in.
