This weeks 1 week project task was too create an 8 paged book as a response to a chosen song given to us. I had chosen to do the 'Ring of Fire' by Johnny Cash.
I had started out by doing some rough visualising thumbnails to get a better idea of what I wanted to do. I knew from the start I wanted to have a strong typographic presence in my book, while following a very simple and minimal style throughout the book.
Once I had got some ideas down for the pages I had created a layout to help me visualise how the magazine will look laid out with each design on the pages.
Then I had gone onto illustrator to start digitalising my design ideas. During this process I had sort of disregarded the lyrics to the songs and its connotations and just used the lyrics as word fillers to create these unique typography designs which can be seen below.
These are the final designs for my book. I wanted to make each page look different but while still allowing the pages to flow so I used the same font throughout the whole book but just changed the weight, size and stroke to allow some variety. I also used no colour apart from the occasional red, I Chose to do this to make the red more dominant and stand out more when reading the book as it has a strong contrast from the black and white colour scheme I had used. Red also has connotations of danger and fire which is the reason I had chosen to use red.
Upon designing the book I had decided to stick to the 8 pages to force myself to find ways of fitting all the text into each page and finding different ways to do this while making it appear different.
Then as a final addition I had done some 3D mockups too see what it would look like printed as a book or magazine.
After completing this first version of the book I wanted to go back and experiment more with double page spreads and seeing how I can adapt my designs to work over 2 pages instead of just one.
Once I was happy with my designs I had once again put them into a magazine to help make them appear more realistic.
