Hierarchy and Layout

For the first week of the Type and Typography module we were given a brief to create an event poster using Hierarchy and Layout. There were some rules we had to follow when starting this project, we have to use create 3 posters in the given formats, 1 for each. We have to keep it black and white, no pictures allowed, we must use all of the copy given, and we must follow the 3 typeface restrictions, One typeface in as many sizes as you see necessary, two typefaces, each in two sizes and one typeface and its related bold, in one size only.

To start off I did some research into the chosen piece of copy that I chose, the 'LIGHT YEARS' event. Looking at what the event itself is, doing some research on the events website and getting some inspiration from the event.

Following this I went into thumbnailing designs for each given format, making sure that Hierarchy and Layout were my main focus point during the whole of this process. I was just designing each layout and not the specific typeface restrictions in too much detail just yet as I wanted to focus on that more when I more over to do it digitally.

I had then taken some of the thumbnails which I found the strongest and started to develop them and apply the type restrictions to them.

This design I created a graphic which I made to look like tickets to the event, then added key information onto them such as the title, location, date, cost.

Following this I had started creating some of the thumbnails. This was the 115x207 Landscape format, and I had used the typeface restriction of One Typeface in as many sizes.

I had used the typeface Editorial New Regular, the copy text was 6/9 and it was set out on a 13 column grid.

I had also experimented with this design in the 140x140mm layout but wasn't really feeling how it looked as the main graphic looked too isolated.

Next I had developed the design in which I used asterisk which links to the title lightyears, due to its similarities with a star.
I had once again done
various thumbnails for each format because I found that this design would work well with each format.

I had then done the similar styled design on the 140x140mm format. Once again using the typeface restriction of 1 typeface in as many sizes.

Here I had then started with the type restriction of only using one typeface in its it normal weight and bold, one size.

Below I had tried the same layout but on a 245x100mm layout, this was using the type restriction of 1 typeface in one size in its related bold.

This is Helvetica regular 6/9

After the tutorials I went had made some improvements and tweaks to my designs with the feedback given.

The first changes I made were to the 155x207 design. I had increased the size of the copy as well as moving the text away from the top left corner to create a relationship between the top left and bottom right corner.

Following on from our final feedback session I had gone and made some more minor changes to enhance my design based on the given feedback.

On this one I had changed the positioning of the title to line it up to the grids which I had created to allow more relation between the type, I had tried both with it linking to the ranging left type and the ranging right text.
