Once I had some layouts done I had started to come up with multiple ideas of how to approach this task. First I wanted to almost make the recipe poster look like a worn scrapbook, I would achieve this by printing out the pictures of the ingredients, and pictures of the process of making the recipe, then stick it down onto some worn paper to make it look vintage and old. I wanted to use loads of tape and textured materials to really make this look authentic and achieve the look I wanted.
Here I had also planned out how I would take the images, whether they would be close up shots to clearly show the ingredient, But also how to show the audience what the indigent is without using words, so I had too make it clear and recognisable for the user to understand. Here I had also done some little simple sketches of the ingredients which I may end up adding to the design to make it clear for the user to distinguish what Is what. |
Design 1 |
This second design I wanted to have my design as almost a flowchart, this will allow it to be easily understood by the audience and its a simply follow and copy idea. I had done a few sketches to see how this could work before starting to develop it further. I had wanted to use photography again on this design but this time from a birds eye view perspective. So here I would take shots of the recipes and process from above and then piece it all together afterwards digitally. This is effective as it will allow the user to see the ingredients next to the mixture next to the final product in a simplified view.
Here I had also figured out how to convey sizes and amounts to the audience. I chose too use cup and spoon sizes, so I drew out some simple cup and spoons, as well as half measurements by halving the drawing. My next problem was deciding how to convey Time in the recipe for the cooling section of the recipe. I chose to use a simple clock design, with no numbers, and black out a time section of it to show the user how long to cool it for. |
Design 2 |
Here are some small drawings I had done to show different parts of my recipe.
The first one Is a trail that would guide my users eye through the design leading them from step 1, too step 2, and so on. I chose use this dashed line as I felt like it wasn't as obstructive as arrows. The second row of design is what I will use when it comes too showing the user when they need to freeze or heat any of the ingredients. The third design I had drawn was to show how long to leave it too freeze for. I says in the recipe let it set for 24 hours, so I chose to use a sun and moon with an arrow to show this, Another time design I had come up with to solve this problem was to have a simple watch face and then draw an arrow around the whole thing to convey the time needed. The fourth and final row of designs I had done were different designs of showing measurements and equipment needed. I made these as simple as possible to make it easy for the user to recognise what they are. |
Once I had done all my designing I had to get the pictures, so I made the recipe, I had chosen to do the rocky road. So I followed the recipe and took pictures of all the ingredients and the process of making them. Making sure to make it look as clear as possible as too what was going on in the pictures so the user could easily tell what was happening and follow it themselves.
While I was making the recipe I had done a rough sketch of what I wanted the final product too look like with everything on it which I needed to take pictures of just to help me visualise it better. |
|
Then I had played around with deciding how I wanted to present all the images onto the recipe so it was efficient and easy for the user to understand. I had done a layout for each of the aspect ratios to help me see which I thought worked best.
After doing some experimenting I liked how the 3:1 aspect ratio looked but didn't like how the arrows looked on it, so I drew some dashed lines which I would use to guide the readers eyes through the design which is seen bellow. I felt this was a lowkey way to show the direction while blending into the recipe.

Then I had got some stickmen as I wanted to have them walking from each process of the recipe. To make it more relevant and link to the design I had changed them to the same colour of the other icons I will put onto my design and then also added a bakers hat on to convey the baking connotations. I chose to use stickmen because its simple and that was the theme I was going for this my recipe.
This is how Ive chosen to display it. I used the dashed lines I made to replace the arrows and then added the stickman onto it to give the design more personality. Following this I then added the stickmen onto my design but I wanted to make them feel like a part of the design and fit in with the flow, so I had made them all unique, giving them tools which are used in the recipe such as a rolling pin, having them dangling from the trail, and at the end serving the rocky roads. |
Following the 2nd feedback session I had gone and experimented with my design a little more.
I had tried another vertical layout with a more minimal construct with the lines and simple arrows. It was also mentioned that I needed a focal point in my design to draw the users eye, so I had taken the final picture of the Rocky Road and made it larger compared to the rest of the pictures. I had also got rid of the dirty looking texture on the background and made it cleaner and lighter. I then wanted to see if I could change the colour of the background, I played around with some warm and cold colours to see which I liked more. I think the light grey in the first one is the best though because its not distracting when looking at the design, but still adds to it. |
I had gone back to the original layout design I had and got rid of the stickmen and dashed lines, and replaced them with more sleek minimal arrows to guide the user through the recipe.
I had then also made the Picture of the final rocky road pieces bigger in this design to create a focal point. Im not a fan of how this looks with the arrows though as it feels a but spacious and the arrows just look like they're floating by themselves and not serving any purpose to the design. |
I had then gone back to my Original design and removed the stickmen, changed the sizes of the images to removes the white space, and make the picture of the final rocky road larger to create a focal point.
I had done this both using the dashed lines but also used a clean line to help push the minimal idea, as in my feedback I was told the dashed lines draw away from the minimal look of the design. |
