Title Sequence

For this task we were asked to create a title sequence for an imagined show that we could create based off given genres. Some specifics in the brief included it must be In the area of 25 too 45 seconds long, must feature the title of the show and it must include at least 3 actors.

I had started this project by deciding which of the genres we were given appealed to me, I ended up choosing to do my development and thumbnails based around the True Crime Documentary series.

Out of these ideas the ones that I thought would be more effective is the first idea, with the scrambling letters and the actors names in red. And also the Super 8 film idea, as I think this could be linked to a documentary series based in the 60s when the Kodak super8 was released.

Below I had taken some of these ideas and visualised them digitally to make more sense of what would work and what won't.

The first idea I had chosen to develop was the one in which I displayed the letters and then scribbled some out to reveal names of the shows cast. I feel like this would fit into the true crime documentary genre as it has a slightly gritty look.

Here I had first been deciding which typeface I wanted to use, and how I would present It in the animation.

I liked the look of some of these typewriter typefaces as it had this old school crime look too it.

I also liked how I could create the contrast to show words by making them red. Although I feel like it doesn't stand out as much as I wanted it too.

Here I had experimented with erasing some of the random letters to create more of a focal point on the main text.

I had also experimented with an ink bleed to see if I could make the text look grittier.

I wasn't the biggest fan of how the digital scratched out letter one looked so I created it using an inky pen, and I still wasn't to pleased with the outcome compared to some if the other ideas.
Picture
Following on from this I wanted to animate it too see how it looks to help me decide if I wanted to carry on with this idea.
Picture
I had then gone into premiere to add sounds to the animation I had so far, I got this typewriter sound and matched it to the animation in my video.

I added a posterize time effect on the animation clip to lower the frame rate to help match the audio track.
Picture
Following this I had added a keyframe and used an effect to lower the volume of my audio file to a short fade, so that the audio doesn't completely stop when the typing ends, but instead slowly fades out to a lower level.

Super 8 Development

Here I had been continuing my experimentation with the super 8 film idea I had for my true crime documentary.

I had come up with an idea for the show to help me better create a title sequence which is relevant to the imagined show. The brief narrative Is its a documentary based on a group of murders at a cinema in Oregon in the 1960s, in which the serial murderer was a woman who worked there at the cinema murdering people during the screenings, she was overlooked as a suspect purely because she's a woman.

Below I had experimented with using some super8 film overlays to give it the effect I wanted, and I had found some stock video footage of a creepy cinema setting.

Here I had been trying out different typefaces to see which one I felt fit the style of my title sequence the best.

Then once I had a rough idea of what I wanted to do I started putting it all together.

I had found a song called 'She's my witch' by Kip Tyler, which is a song that came out in the 1960s, the same time my documentary is set, and it has a creepy tone with lyrics talking about a creepy female figure, which also fits nicely with the tone of the documentary.
Picture
I had started layering it together adding some grain effects which make the footage look older and authentic to a super8 camera.

Following on from this I will then animate my text over it In the position I want. I haven't done this yet so I've just done some stills of how it will look placed over my footage.

Then I did some experimenting with how I could layout the credits, playing with hierarchy to construct importance.

Following on from a brief feedback session it was suggested that I could merge the 2 ideas I have expanded on together, and I loved that idea and thought it could be done really effectively.

So I wanted to create the typewriter animation again but make it relevant to my title sequence. I had chosen to call the Documentary 'The Cinema Slasher', Below I had done some quick experimenting to see what I could do with it keeping with the typewriter animation I had.
Picture
I wanted to keep the same sort of animation with the letters being typed then forming the name from the letters. So I had jotted down how I could do this with multiple rows of type. How I could lay them all out and what style I wanted to use.

I also thought about how I could move the type once I have just the title, and how I wanted to display that by itself.

Picture
I had animated this with the same typewriter effect as before but I wasn't the biggest fan of how it looked and the choppiness of the text coming in.
Picture
Following on I had gone into after effects to create a similar animation but smoother. I also wanted to incorporate another one of my original ideas into the animation, which was having a camera pan over the text.
I had put in the flat text then made a 3D composition and used keyframe opacity to give my text that same typewriter effect I had previously created in photoshop.

I had then added a camera and paned it over my text showing emphasis on the red letters which spell out the title of my show, 'The Cinema Slasher'
Picture
Picture
Picture
This looked too fast and blurred to easily read what It was saying, so I will slow It down and remove some motion blur, and adjust the camera aperture to give a better effect.

Below I had added the full title and adjusted the cameras route to cover all the text.
Picture

I then chose to zoom the camera back out to reveal the full title and smoothed the animation to make it easier on the eyes.
Picture

Picture
Below is the the final version of this I have made which I will add to the rest of the title sequence.

Now I went back to working out putting together the rest of the video.

Below are stills from each shot I have included in my title sequence.

Then I had done some colour grading to suck out some of the saturation of the clips to give it that authentic super8 feel, then pieced it all together with all the clips and the audio to see how it ran before I added the credits to the video.

I had also added in all the audio for the sequence which includes the song, 'she's my witch' which runs the whole length and clipped to the duration of the video. A film stutter effect to give It an authentic feel. And then at the end for the 2 typewriter clips I've added an audio for that to make the shots feel more alive.
Picture

After this I had edited the super8 frame to remove the side part to allow me to centre the video and scale it up a little to see how it looked and If I thought it looked more effective. I really liked how it looked centred as it looks almost simpler and will allow the text to be a stronger focal point.
Picture
Picture

Here I had done some more typeface experimentation to find a typeface which I think will fit well with the title sequence for displaying the credits.

I had then gone and decided how I was going to animate this. So I did some different variations to see which was the most effective. Some of my favourites I had created are the 2 below, ones a glitchy jumpy type effect I had created, and the other is just a simple fade which I find is really effective.
Picture

Picture
Below I had put the text effect onto my base video too see how It looks when fading in and out.

I had then created several of these for each named credit to include on the title sequence.
Each has been animated to create a unique effect and movement.

I had then put everything together including all the animated text, layers and adjustment layers and audio files. Below is the completed timeline as well as the final title sequence.
