Book Design

For this brief we had to create 3 different book covers with the audience being the main thought while designing them. We were given 3 books for 3 different audiences and genres;

- Murder Most Unladylike (Children's Fiction)
- Girl, Woman, Other (Adult Fiction)
- Diary of a Young Naturalist (Adult Non-Fiction)

We were asked to do and show as many different ways of experimenting when approaching this task In all different mediums, styles and techniques, so below I have done some rough thumbnails for each cover.

Once I felt comfortable with some ideas for each design I moved top digital to start creating them. I used the indesign document provided on the penguin website to ensure that I was working in the right size and made sure I included all the standards and copy that was required.

Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo

I chose to start off with using the gender symbols as a design element for this cover as the book has strong links to gender, identity, feminism and much more which shows its relevance, I want to use 12 symbols due to there being 12 women in which the book focuses on.

`Since its all about diversity and identity I wanted to use a mix of the gender symbols and use the corresponding colour for each one and layer them up onto my cover.
I started to find the pink to be too stereotypical so I decided to experiment using different colour schemes.

Diary of a Young Naturalist by Dara McAnulty

With this design I really wanted to use some imagery, more specifically something with heavy links to nature, which obviously ties into the book and themes. One idea I had was having a foliage of plants set at the bottom and then the title at the top, so I had taken some pictures of plants and I put them into indesign and started creating some layouts.
Picture
This was an idea that I had abandoned very quickly when realising its not something which I was able to do what I wanted with the image and the space so I moved onto another idea.

Next I wanted to try a more simple approach and just use a simple image of a leaf.

For the one below I had experimented with how I wanted to display and style the box in which the type sits in.

Then once I was more comfortable with some rough layouts I wanted to experiment with the typeface more so I tried out some different options.
Picture
Once I had a rough groundwork to the direction I wanted to take this cover in I had started working on it as a whole with all the given copy.
Picture
I didn't like how the leaf that sat In the spine nearly touched both the edges so I edited the image to allow me to have it slightly smaller, but in doing so now the rest of the leaves appear smaller.

Murder Most Unladylike - Children's Fiction.

Below I had done some experimenting with the title for his book as I wanted to once again go in the type direction with it, a heavy influence for this project is Art Deco due to the time period in which the book is set. As well as playing around with some colour for it.

Once I got comfortable with the direction in which I wanted to go down I started applying this to the cover of the book itself.

Below I've started working on refining these ideas across the spine, then also starting to develop the back of the book and how I want to style the given copy onto the book.

Below I had put it all together but was still a little unsure on whether I wanted the title and author on the cover to be in the same typeface or not.

Following some feedback I had made some changes to some of the designs.

Below I had done some more small adjustments to the covers.

For Girl Woman Other it was suggested that I changed the colour for some of the type, so I changed the colour of the media reviews to colours from the graphic but I wasn't liking how this looked.
Picture
For Murder Most Unladylike I just made sure I had no hanging orphans on the blurb copy and changed the colour to a dark blue which was suggested. But once again I wasn't really liking how this looked.
Picture

Below I had made some more changes to Diary of a Young Naturalist and changed the colour of some of the accent colours to a darker green.
I had also done an autumnal version of this design to see how it looked with more orange colours.
Picture
Picture
For Girl Woman Other I had changed the positioning and layout of the back cover and added an image of some natural black skin to bring in those connotations from the book itself, but I wasn't really like this as I felt like it didn't feel like it went with the cover.
Picture
Picture
For Murder Most Unladylike I had made all the elements on the front cover the same colour and made them a dark purple to avoid using black, as well as fixing some issues in the formatting of the text.
