For this task I was asked to create a 3D poster for the movie 'Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women'. After watching the movie and doing some research on both vintage and 60s sci-fi horror posters, as well as researching 3D methods that I could use to create the final piece, I had started doing some rough sketched to get some ideas down of how I wanted to approach this.
While watching the movie I had written notes to do with the narrative, plot and story arcs, characters, themes and anything else I had picked up while watching it.
I wanted to create my scene in 3D and then add my title digitally so I had started deciding how I wanted to go about this. I started with some rough sketching to see if I wanted to create a custom typeface, or find one that is similar to the style I wanted. I wanted to use a blocky bold typeface for this as It will go well with what I'm planning on creating.
I had started with some really rough sketching first before neatening it up a bit.
Below I had experimented more with the title of the movie.
I had then digitally experimented with colours to find a colour scheme which I liked and suited the vibe of the movie that would go well with my poster. I had taken inspiration from other older horror / sci-fi posters.
Before creating nets for the title I created 3D versions of the titles to help me decide how I wanted to lay it out.
Then I had started experimenting with creating this in 3D out of paper, I only did the first word of the title 'VOYAGE' due to time restrains and I'm only experimenting with it at the moment.
I had also experimented with using light to cast shadows here.
I really liked how the shadows looked in the previous experimentation so I wanted to do it with an image. Below I have shown the process of how I created this effect. I had taken a screenshot from the movie, put it into photoshop and created a threshold to knock out the colour and details then played around will I had a good amount of black and white details on the image. I had then printed it out, cut around the white parts of the image then used a light to cast the shadow onto a screen.
I then wanted to create this but with the text for my poster, so I had printed out the text and cut it out so I can then cast the shadow.
While printing out my text my printer decided to run out of ink. The plus side too that is it created this really weird but cool effect.
Then later on it did the same thing again but came out with this cool vapour-wave looking text.
Below is how the final piece of this came out, I only chose to do the top half of the titles due to time restrains and wanting to do other experimentation.
Following on from this I had chose to develop one of my original ideas further. I had done some more in-depth visualisation of this before moving onto creating it.
I had used card and brown paper to created the caves and layered them at different levels to cast a shadow and also allow the to bring some depth to the poster.
Next I needed to make the background, In the movie theres a very hazy / foggy sky so I wanted to bring that into my design, I did this by using cotton wool and pulling It apart so it appeared very thing and light.
This is a still from the movie which shows the fog / haze I was attempting to recreate.
Here I had placed it all together and played around with the lighting to create different shadows.
Below I had developed the cave further. I had looked at stalagmites and attempted to recreate this look to make it resemble a cave more. I had also done multiple layers again but bringing them all together through playing with the hight and positioning.
I really liked how this looked but needed to figure out how to put the text into it, my first idea was to have the text placed in the middle on the clouds, but that idea kinda failed when I tried it. So I had come up with the idea to bring the top of the cave up further so I could cut the title out of it so you could see the clouds through it.
I had cut the title out of the same material paper as I did the caves in.
Here I had put both the images together and then I would follow on and finalise this digitally.
Below I had made some changes in photoshop to blend the 2 images together, neaten it up a little to improve the image.
I had pushed text up to make it fit in an A4 poster formant. But I'm still not happy with how it looks as it feels really bland and lacks life, and as a 3D poster, it needs life.
Below I had added some adjustment layers to my image to help bring life into it. I had used some curves layers to bring more shadows and contrast into the images which makes it appear more 3D and gave it a more enhanced look.
I had also then flipped the text and positioned it on the top of the images which I feel like it more effective.
I had then tortured myself by watching the film again to make sure my poster really looked like it belonged in the movie, and it didn't, felt like something was missing and the colours where bugging me the most as it didn't really fit the same colours as the clouds and caves in the movie.
Below are 2 screen grabs from the movie, the first one shows the colour of the caves, they're a very grey dull colour, and mine caves I had created where brown. And then the clouds in the movie are a old sepia colour, compared to mine being a bright white. So I changed my poster to fit this style more.
I played around with the colouring, hue and saturation of the images to make It resemble the 2 images above and I already think this is miles better than before.
Then I had added some little details at the bottom, a billing block with all the correct credits for the movie, as well as some logos for the licensing and edge rating for the movie which are also both correct.
I had then added some subtle texture onto the poster to make it look more worn down and have the same film overlay and grain which the movie has.
