Colour, Composition and Linear Narrative

Analoge Tasks

During this first week we were asked to do a few different tasks including paint. Firstly I was asked to create a colour wheel using red, blue and yellow to create different colours on the wheel.

Following this task we were asked to create some grey scales. I had done the first one in black, attempting to go from black to white. And the 2nd one going from black to what was meant to be red, but turned out more dark pink. I had also struggled a lot to get them to go fully to white as you can see.

Then finally we had been asked to create a 6x6 grid of 2cm squares, and using black, white and the 3 primary colours, create a pallet of colours in a range of colour, hue, saturation, making sure every square Is in a different colour.

Digital Tasks

For this weeks digital tasks we were asked to create some typographic designs using just the provided typefaces and nothing else, Allowing us to experiment with colour and composition. We also had to display different themes through this work which included Scale, Playful, Power, Pattern, Feminine and Masculine.

Here I had decided to take one of the designs I had and expand and develop my idea to create several different versions of the design. I really liked the contrast from the colours with the white on the red background, so I had kept that idea and then started experimenting with adding an additional typeface to it. I also really liked the contrast between the bold sans serif font with the curvy serif font.

Following this I had decided to experiment with doing that task in 3D. I had used both colour and composition during my process as well as applying the colour halftones for some of the backgrounds which Dave had showed us during the Friday IT session to help make my background slightly less boring.

The second weeks tasks included researching 3 Graphic Designers, Vaughan Oliver, Peter Grundy and El Lissitzky, and then create 3 different book jacket designs in each of the artists unique style. Each thumbnail design takes inspiration and style from chosen pieces of work from the 3 given graphic designers.

Starting this task I had done some small thumbnail visuals for each designer and book.

Bridget Jones Diary - Peter Grundy

Animal Farm - El Lissitzky

Following the thumbnails I had gone onto illustrator and had started to expand and develop my initial thumbnail ideas to create a digital version of them.

Once I was happy with all my designs I wanted to take it one step further, since these where book jacket designs I wanted to mock them up to allow the presentation to be more professional but to also see how effective they work.
