What is a Subculture
Ross Haenfler - A relatively diffuse social network having a shared identity, distinctive meanings around certain ideas, practices, and objects, and a sense of marginalization from or resistance to a perceived “conventional” society. Shared Distinct Meanings - Meanings are created and enforced through social interaction and continue to develop and grow as time goes on, this allows for the unique practices of the subculture to develop and steer away from the generic norm in society. Resistance - Subculturists tend to come together based on the shared set of values and ethics and will normally resist or subvert the ideas and values proposed by the mainstream cultures ideology. Marginalisation - Subcultures all share a level of status, and the sense that some choose their marginalisation. Nobody forces people to adopt a certain subculture identity, yet people do this regardless and then get viewed as a outsider. |
